The first thing to do when shed building is of course to select an appropriate set of plans. With these in hand it's time to get to work and build it and the best place to start is from the floor up. After all it's pretty hard to build from the top down!
Whatever the purpose of your shed you'll need to build a base that is strong enough to withstand all the things stood on it and all that nature can throw against it. A well built base should be held above the ground and not in direct contact with the bare earth. That way you'll avoid getting damp in your shed and it will generally last longer if you set it on joists like this. Even raising your shed in this manner is not enough. The joists that separate the shed base from the ground must themselves be on a hard surface to prevent subsidence. Pouring concrete into a frame and levelling it is a very good way of achieving this, as is compacting gravel.
3 Circular Saw
The width of the joists separating the ground from the shed building base is very important. There needs to be enough airflow to let moisture evaporate, usually about 3 inches or 7 cm is enough. This means you need to get joists this width at least. To avoid having your shed floor sagging it's a good idea to have your floor joists a maximum of 12 inches or 30cm apart. Although these joists will help prevent the shed itself from rotting, the floor joists are still at risk and must be protected with a good wood treatment, especially if there are any sawn ends.
The floor of your shed can be made from a variety of materials but one of the easiest is plywood. It can be easily cut and is relatively cheap. Having said that you should try to get a higher grade of plywood because the floor is going to support everything you put in your shed building and will have more wear and tear than any other part except perhaps the door. When cutting the plywood sheets to size make sure you follow basic saw sense; place it on a proper surface like a bench. Cutting on the floor may damage your saw blade even though it's very tempting try to avoid doing this. As for the best type of saw to use; you can use any type but many find a powered circular saw the easiest and quickest. Make sure you keep any off cuts for small jobs later on.
Once you have all the right floor pieces cut to size you then have to lay them. Do this by placing the cut edges together and drill through to the joists. These holes should be no more than 12 inches apart. With the floor complete you can start work on the rest of the shed building in the knowledge that you've set good foundations for the rest of your work.
