3 Circular Saw

Bands saws are used to cut thinner material into odd shapes with less wastage from the width of the blade. The thin flexible blade allows material to be cut with a radius curve smaller than you can get from a circular saw. With a band saw, you rotate the material as you cut it to achieve the curve you desire. It is possible to make a tool called a jig that will help you to achieve a very smooth curve reducing the amount of sanding needed to finish the piece.

The band on the band saw being thin and flexible has a tendency to break while you are cutting material. When this happens, shut the machine off and replace the blade. Usually the blade will break at the point it was welded together and will not shatter into pieces. When you purchase replacement blades, spend the money necessary to get the best you can find. The welds will be stronger and the blade will last you much longer than cheaper blades will. Be careful when pushing material into the blade. Do not wear any gloves or loose fitting long sleeves when operating a band saw. The blade has a tendency to catch such items and draw the flesh under it into the blade cutting quickly and deeply. Whenever operating any equipment that Chicago power tools offers, wear protective eyewear to protect your eyes from flying materials.

Chicago Electric power tools offers quality power tools at bargain basement prices. They have the tools you desire at the prices you want to pay. When you are on a limited budget to fill your workshop with tools to accomplish those projects you absolutely have to get done, Chicago Electric power tools are definitely the best option available. You can find these tools online or at selected stores in your area.

How to Build a Dog House Out of Wood

If you would like to build a dog house out of wood, you will need a few simple tools from your garage and the right wood to get started.

3 Circular Saw

The supplies you will need include:

3 Circular Saw

· One exterior grade plywood sheet (about 4 feet by 8 feet and 5/8'' thick)
· Two 2''x4''x8' pressure treated boards
· One 2''x4''x8' untreated boards
· One box of 1-5/8'' galvanized deck screws
· One bundle of composite roof shingles
· One tube of wet/dry roof cement

The tools you need include:

· Hammer
· Tape measure
· Table saw or circular saw
· Drill
· Pen or pencil
· Caulking gun

When you begin constructing a dog house, you need to make sure it is large enough for the dog to comfortable turn around in, but small enough to keep their body heat close. IF possible, raise the floor of the dog house off the ground to help insulate it from the cold.

The first thing you will need to construct is the base or foundation of the dog house. Because most dog houses sit directly on the ground, you will want to use pressure-treated wood to go under the dog house. Be sure to close them off from the dog so they can't chew on it. (Pressure treated wood contains harmful toxins). Frame out the base to the specifications you need. Then, nail the foundation together using penny nails. Drill 1'' holes in the sides of the base to allow moisture from the ground to evaporate and to prevent wood rot. Place small screens over the holes to prevent rodents and birds from getting in.

Cut out all the wood before you begin nailing it randomly to the base. The walls and roof should be cut at the same time. This way you can determine if all the sides of the dog house are matching up to the roof and the base and are flush with each other. Cut out the wood after you have done proper measurements and you are sure it all fits. Now, attach the side frames to the base. Once you have attached the side frames, it is time to construct the roof frame. Using a forty five degree angle, cut the rafters and struts and attach them to the walls. You should now have a framed dog house.

Use your large piece of plywood for the walls and the roof. Attach the plywood and then you can begin shingling the roof. When you are shingling the roof, you can use the roof wet/dry cement, or you can use nails. If you use nails to attach the shingles, you need to bend the nails on the inside of the dog house to prevent your dog from getting scratched. Some construction plans are designed to make the roof removable for easier cleaning. You can construct this type of roof by making one side larger than the other and then use screws to attach them together. Use wet/dry cement in areas that look like a leak can come through. Instead of using rafters, you will just attach the roof to the walls. This isn't very strong and durable, so during the snowy months, you will have to come out and clean the snow off the roof.

Once your dog house is complete, you should paint it with weatherproof stain or paint. This will prevent water damage and it will protect the wood from rot. If you have any leftover carpet, place it inside the dog house and then place a used blanket on top, this will give your dog a little padding and extra insulation.

In Review: Makita's SP6000K1 Track Saw System

If you've ever used a track saw, you know that the rail guide system is one of the most innovative, sophisticated cutting systems ever developed, that when using a track saw, you achieve smoother, more accurate, and altogether better results. If you've ever used a Makita power tool, you'll also know that Makita is one of the most high-performance manufacturers in the business, that Makita tools are designed and fabricated to a higher standard of excellence. Now, knowing both of these things, one can naturally deduce that a Makita track saw would be one of the most amazing systems conceivable.

3 Circular Saw

Fortunately for every party involved, Makita does make a track saw, and its amazing. With the capacity to make precise, perfect cuts at any point in a panel, to create straight edges on rough stock, cross cut, bevel cut, rip sheet goods, and etc, the saw is one of those power tools that will consistently impress, and, perhaps even release those proverbial little butterflies in the bellies of even the toughest craftsmen. In the end, the Makita SP6000K1 is a high-performance beauty with the cutting chops to do all your cutting bidding with a refined kind of excellence.

3 Circular Saw

Built around a powerful 6-1/2" plunge cut circular saw and a meticulously designed 55" guide rail, the SP6000K1 system perfectly interacts to produce the smoothest, straightest cuts. In fact, as far as bevel cuts are concerned, Makita's system is very likely the most sophisticated - with dual front and rear bevel supports designed to hold the blade firmly in position as you cut, the saw provides incredibly smooth, dead-on accurate bevel cuts with a nearly unbelievable simplicity and smoothness. The saw's electronic speed control also maintains constant speed under load to ensure your cuts are entirely splinter free and always boasting a mirror-like finish.

With variable speeds ranging from 2,000 - 5,000 RPM and a large cutting and bevel capacity (equip with convenient positive stops at 22.5-degrees and 45-degrees) the saw offers powerful versatility and optimal control over every type of application. The thing also offers nearly to-the-wall cutting for greater working possibilities, and with a soft-start feature and electronic current limiter, the tool's high-performance motor will continue kicking the sass out of your projects for seriously long time. The SP6000K1 is additionally made up of durable and lightweight magnesium components, rendering it well balanced and comfortable to operate while also tough enough to circumvent the rigors of jobsite life.

The saw's smooth plunge release offers additional user comfort and because the thing also provides extremely simple depth adjustments, a depth stop, an electronic brake, fast and simple blade changes, a saw base that is compatible with competing rails, and a rear dust port that can not only connect to a collection system, but automatically redirects dust and debris away from the cutting action, the system is comprehensive and completely awesome.

Woodworking Hand Tools Needed by a Professional Furniture Maker - Part3

In this article the last of the series of three, I am talking about the last section of tools that a young apprentice cabinetmaker would need to start off their collection of handtools. In previous weeks I've talked about planes and chisels, marking and measuring tools and all that remains now are two areas of hand tools that have changed most for the modern European cabinet maker - those of saws and routers.

3 Circular Saw

There was a time when a cabinet makers toolkit would have half a dozen hand saws. He'd have two or three back saws, dovetail saw, a tenon saw, maybe a coping saw. He would also have several long saws, a rip saw, a cross cut saw, probably a couple of panel saws sharpened in different ways. Each of these saws had a different purpose and would be used for a different part of the job. Tool catalogues were full to busting of saw companies products boasting features like breasted tooth lines and taper grinding .

3 Circular Saw

All this now is no more. In the modern cabinet makers workshop the bench saw has largely been replaced either by the small machine - like the table saw or the band saw, or by the portable hand tool such as the jig saw or contractors circular saw. I don't propose to look at power tools or machines in this article but will still concentrate on what is left, for what is left is actually quite important. It will be a sad day when a cabinet maker can't actually pick up a saw and cut a piece of wood dead straight, trim the end of a tenon or cut a mitre just shy of the line.

But sometimes it feels like that day isn't too far away for so much of the sawing dimensioning of components is done nowadays on the small machine. It's so much easier to potter off away from the bench, in our case go downstairs to a machine room and buzz that little bit of wood off on the table saw. Cutting it off by hand involves effort, energy and skill. It also involves a good saw. Now it saddens me that when I look in the tool catalogue these days, the saw section which used to occupy a whole chapter is now condensed down to two or three pages but it's still possible to buy an excellent saw , the trouble is it comes from Japan.

Here at our Shebbear workshops I must admit that we have allowed the "tools of the devil" to take over. I've had Japanese chisels and waterstones in my workshop for 20 or more years but Japanese saws came when Nick Chandler and I got together 4 years ago. I had never really taken to Japanese saws but many of my students have used them with great success. Basically because when I started work I was lucky enough to find myself a really good dovetail saw. This was a saw made by Roberts & Lee and fitted with an open handle. For nearly twenty years I was advising students to buy similar Roberts & Lee, Dorchester, dovetail saws. Now lots of my students bought their 8 inch and 10 inch saws with beautiful walnut handles and lovely brass backs.

They paid something approaching £50 for each saw Just recently I decided to treat myself to a new 10 inch dovetail saw. A natural choice wasn't a Japanese rubbishy thing but the £49 Roberts & Lee, Dorchester, 590 walnut handled whizzo dovetail saw. I thought it was British and I've had a saw like that for over 25 years. Fair to say I unhappy with my new saw I experienced myself the disappointment I had visited upon so many of my students. The thickness of the saw plate was roughly similar to my old dovetail saw. The quality and weight of the brass back was if anything a little heavier, which is probably appropriate for a slightly longer saw. The way that the handle was fitted to the back and blade assembly was loose and sloppy. Even with the blade tightened as much as I could there was a gap of a quarter of a millimetre on either side where my old saw was tight and snug. Why in this age when such wonderful feats of engineering can be accomplished as a manner of course by robots can we not make a back saw with a decently fitting wooden handle. When it came to using the saw I was prepared for a tussle.

Dovetail saws come with a crosscut sharpening and wide set that means they don't really function very well especially ripping dry hardwood. What with all the saws I've helped students set up over the years I learnt how to get these little saws running reasonably well. It involves firstly taking a cloth soaked in thinners to the blade and removing most of the gunk that manufacturers leave on the blade to protect it from rust whilst it is in the shop. Once you've done this it's necessary to slightly stone off some of the set applied to the saw. A dovetail saw is a precision instrument the way these saws are set in the factory is to my mind much too coarse.

A good dovetail saw should cut a nice fine kerf and you can only achieve this by stoning off some of the set by running a fine stone down either side of the blade or as I used to do tapping the set back with a small hammer on an anvil. This can get the saw running reasonably well but what it really needs is a full re-sharpen and that's best accomplished by taking a small saw file and filing a 90 degree to the saw blade just one stroke per tooth. I think that dovetail saws when sharpened new are sharpened in cross cut fashion when really most of the action, certainly in our workshop, a rip point seems to work much more efficiently.

Now you can be patriotic and you can go on supporting these old saw makers but there comes a day when somebody puts a saw in your hands that works so much better, costs less than half as much, you have to think why am I beating my head against this brick wall.. Perhaps I should not continue to advise you go on paying nearly £50 for British saw when there's the Japanese equivalent for £17.79 that does the job rather better straight out of the box. But then I remember what they did to our motorcycle industry.

Now the difficulty with these Japanese saws is they require a different technique. They cut on the pull stroke whereas European saws cut on the push. But don't they work beautifully. Two saws that seem to have found a home in our workshop are the Doutsuki-Me which seems to be the equivalent of the European dovetail saw and the professional Ryoba saw. The Doutsuki-Me saw is a very fine light back saw with a long handle which makes the control relatively straight forward. But the problem everyone had a few years ago with these saws was sharpening the wretched things. That has been overcome recently with the introduction of the replaceable blade. Nowadays the Doutsuki-Me saw is sold complete for just under £18 and a spare standard blade for just over £10. I think Nick tends to replace his saw blade maybe two or three times a year which makes this quite an expensive saw, but for the cabinetmaker this is a very important tool and one would spend whatever is necessary within reason to achieve these results .

The Ryoba saw also has a replaceable blade, but don't confuse replaceable in this context with the cheap throw away blades found European saws. This is a saw made for the professional market. The saw has two cutting edges. The top edge has rip teeth with a finer set of teeth adjacent to the handle for starting the cut while the other edge has cross cut teeth which gives a very smooth clean cut. The centre of the blade is scraped out in the same way that old fashioned panel saws had tapered round blades this is done to help prevent the saws sticking in a deep cut. I must admit that these "tools of the devil" have taken a long time to arrive in my very conservative and chauvinistic workshop. Even given my support for the British motorcycle industry I can't go on supporting Messrs Roberts & Lee when the design and construction of their best saws seems to have deteriorated over time rather than improved.

Now we come to routers. The second area I want to look at is the single tool that has changed cabinet making in the last 25 years - that of the router. I must admit that I hate routers. Not for what it's done to cabinet making but for the bloody noise and mess they make. They are filthy tools that create a fine dust that covers the whole workshop in brown snow and admit a scream that would drive a Methodist to drink. As far as I'm concerned the only good router's a dead router. However they are incredibly useful. A router is essentially a small portable machine centre, infinitely versatile, used in a myriad of ways depending on your tooling and ingenuity. We have five routers in the shop at the moment and probably two are in if not constant then in intermittent use most of the time

The most useful is a small router and I think the small router would be the only I would recommend a beginner to buy first. The large router is a bit of a brute but eventually you will need a large router as well as a small one. Of the small routers today available on the market the choice in the professional workshop seems to be between the Dewalt DW6201K and the Trend T5. Both these routers have variable speed and a proven track record. I think the Dewalt weighs in at £212 while the Trend costs £159 including a metal box. I think if I were buying a new router today I would probably go for the Trend T5 but then this is because it's so similar to my old Elu router that I would feel at home and comfortable with it.

A new router in the larger category which found a place in our affections most recently is the Freud FT2000VCE. This is a half inch router with loads of grunt but it comes equipped with a very accurate and nice to use fine depth adjuster which makes it very useful for fitting underneath a router table. This is one of the major uses in this workshop of this kind of big router. This place isn't really the place to discuss the merit of each particular model of router. One point I would like to stress is the way a small hand held router usually with a quarter inch collet has really become a key hand tool in the cabinet makers tool box. Rather than filling his tool box with half sets of molding planes, the young cabinet maker will be gathering together assorted set of router bits of different sizes and shapes and qualities.

Our toolkit series is complete but this is just the start of the process of assembling your set of tools . It seems to me that the professional is always seeking to have the best tools available not the most tools. We always seem to seek to replace that irritating plane with a better one or with something that will do the job better. Like a better dovetail saw.

Planning for, Choosing and Installing Granite Countertops

As with most all projects, in the correct weather, it is most enjoyable planning the project while snuggled up in pure wool blankets for sale.

3 Circular Saw

As soon as the cabinets are installed, measure very carefully for the granite counter top. The overall granite size should overlap the top of the cabinets by 1" to 1 1/2". The outside edge of the counter top should have a finished edge specified. A bull-nose edge is one style used often. Granite can be ordered in a modular system which is best for doing it yourself. With the weight of the granite it requires a 3/4" plywood base over the top of the cabinets for support.

3 Circular Saw

Choosing granite includes selecting grade, color, layout, style, etc. Once the choices are made the granite must be ordered as soon as possible. It can take a couple to several weeks for delivery. If you choose to use a granite fabricator, the fabricator will usually want to do its own measurement and installation to be sure the work is done properly. Lastly, make sure there is proper storage space for the slabs before they are installed.

The top of all the base cabinets must be covered with the 3/4" plywood to support the granite. It must be cut only to the outside edge of the cabinets and will give the clearance for drawers and doors if using the bull-nose edging. The plywood should be attached with screws.

The granite slabs can be very heavy. Get the help you need and handle them with care. To cut (scribe) to fit, apply duct tape to the base of the saw to protect the granite. Use a dry cut segmented diamond blade on a circular saw to do the necessary cutting. Test the fitting for pieces that are cut.

Place the slab in place on the sink counter. Trace around the opening exactly for the sink onto the plywood. Remove the dry-fitted slabs only. Make a pilot hole in the plywood then use a jigsaw to cut the sink hole. Cut about 1/8" outside the line you drew for the sink. Place the sink in the hole prepared.

Leveling the slabs to join the seams, use a 1-1/4" screw from underneath to raise and lower the countertop. Use a level to assure accuracy as you work with the screws.

To glue the counter top down, having others helping, lift the granite and put half-dollar dollops of silicone all around the perimeter of the cabinets. Spacing should be about every 6" to 12". Next place a bead of caulk around the sink rim sealing the sink to the plywood. Then apply a second bead on top of sink rim. This will waterproof the gap between the sink and the counter top. Now gently lower the granite slab back down.

To glue the seams tape over each seam with blue masking tape. To fill in the seams start with a dollop of polyester-based resin and add a little amount of color. Try to match the granite color. Mix the resin with a putty knife checking the color match. Make a few different colors to blend the seam. Add the hardener 3% to 97% resin. Mix only small amount for the 5 minutes before it will dry.

Apply a base-coat of a neutral color mix to the seam. Smooth as applied also adding a little lighter color. Put in the darkest color last. As soon as finished remove the masking tape. After the resin is dried smooth it out with a seam stone using a slow speed keeping the stone moving in small circles.

One item I often think is that this project is not the same as glass table top replacement.

Does Your Brand Represent You? 3 Ways to Tell

If you know my history, you know that I've started and ended a few brands in the last 5 years. Two of them were personal brands, and two were corporate. In all of those experiences, I've learned to really think about what it means to brand yourself or your new company.

3 Circular Saw

Where I started:

3 Circular Saw

Color: Believe it or not, color has underlying meaning. Red is symbolic of power, of being "sassy." Green these days has a very environmental, or nature-centric feel. And so on. (There's a great color series on Jennifer Bourn's blog, Bourn Creative)

Think about your personality, and the personality of your brand. What colors would best represent that? If there's no clear answer, then think about what colors are your favorite instead. Sometimes, those colors are the best choice, both because they best represent YOU and because you're going to have to look at them every day, on every piece of marketing material you see.

Font: All fonts have personalities, not just the fancy ones. Overused fonts, or system fonts, often look amateur to a consumer's eye. Times New Roman, for example, should never be a part of your brand, anywhere. (Sorry, but it's true!) There are so many professional fonts out there, nice ones, both serif (with tags like Times) and sans-serif (like Arial) that can properly represent your brand. Those fonts can look chic, western, spooky, round and happy, artistic, and so on and so on. If you and your brand are super corporate, find a nice font that hasn't been used on everything under the sun. Try Garamond! Try anything else! Regardless of what you choose, it should be authentically YOU. My favorite place to search for new fonts is myfonts.com - and yes, I believe you SHOULD pay for fonts, but that's for another post.

And never, ever, choose Comic Sans, unless you specifically own a business that caters to kids. (and even if you do, it's the parents that pay for it) :)

Image: You don't HAVE to have an image as part of your logo, but if you do, it should say something and mean something. Just because it means something to YOU doesn't mean it has anything to do with your business. A shiny red ball really says nothing about you or your brand unless you manufacture shiny red balls.

Example: I once had a client who was a landscaper. His logo was an odd looking pyramid with a flag on either side - a Mexican flag and a US flag. When I asked him why, he said he had spent time in a place where they had pyramid-looking mountains, and that place was in Mexico. But his logo had nothing to do with landscaping! Most people probably wondered what the heck it was when they saw it on his business card. I certainly did. I get that the imagery was meaningful to him, but not only was it irrelevant, it was way too complicated for a logo.

Choose something simple, something recognizable, something that, when people see it, they will immediately think of you. Logo imagery can be clever, even when it's simple. And it can also look professional, even when it's simple.

Does your brand accurately represent you? What do you think people think of when they look at your logo? (If you're curious, I bet I could tell you. Or ask your local neighborhood friendly designer.)

DEWALT DCS391L1 circular saw
The DCS391L1 circular saw houses a 460 MWO motor that delivers 3,7000 RPM for powerful and fast cutting capabilities (view larger.)
Power and Performance
Delivering 3,700 RPM, the DCS391 is 10 percent more powerful than previous DEWALT 6.5-inch cordless circular saws. This, combined with a new 3.0 Ah lithium-ion battery that provides up to 57 percent more runtime versus leading 18-volt lithium-ion tools, leads to a faster speed of cut and the power needed to make the most demanding cuts with ease. Its powerful 460 max-watts-out (MWO) motor delivers the power and speed needed to make demanding cuts, and the three speed settings give professionals the option to select the most appropriate speed for a given task. DEWALT-designed electronics have been built into the circular saw’s switch to provide maximum life for the tool and battery by helping to protect them from overheating, overloading, and deep discharge during use. The included charger has dual voltage capabilities, and it is compatible with both 12-volt max and 20-volt max DEWALT lithium-ion batteries.

Comfort and Convenience
The DCS391 offers ergonomic benefits with a lightweight magnesium shoe and a rubber overmold handle grip that provides comfort and control. The comfortable handle and battery slide-pack also allow for improved balance compared with existing DEWALT offerings on the market. It has a bevel capacity of 0-50 degrees, and a 6.5-inch-thin kerf carbide tooth blade provides users with the ability to cut completely through two-by framing lumber at a 45-degree bevel angle—all of which makes it ideal for a variety of applications.

Best Router Bits Revealed

Routers are without a doubt one of the most important tools for woodworking. But without router bits, a router is as useless as a shovel without a handle.

3 Circular Saw

With the vast number of bits on the market, choosing the right router bits can be quite overwhelming. If this is your first experience with routers, a good starter base of router bits (depending on your needs) would include 8 basic bits that we have divided in two groups: Technical and Decorative Molding

3 Circular Saw

TECHNICAL:

These are the types used for tenons, mortises, grooves, furrows, slots, etc. The straight 1/4" bit is very useful for trimming furrows for hinges... as an example. The reduced diameter of this bit allows for easy control of the router. This straight bit is the most useful of basics when you want to work in the center of a piece... whether it be for grooving and even for engraving. With time you will add larger diameters to your set of straight router bits.

The next technical bits which are a must for anyone wanting to build furniture, and more specifically for creating mortises in your basic set are: The straight 1/2" diameter, and the 1/2" mortise. Note that the mortise bit is better suited to get rid of shavings. Also keep in mind that mortises in furniture building are usually 1/2" in width. Also realize that you can still create 1/2" mortises with a very standard drill bit.

Another technical bit which should be part of your basic arsenal, and is indispensable when creating grooves, furrows, or slots, is the one shown in the image. This router bit has three chiseling knives of 1/4" in width, by 1 1/2" in diameter. This one does not come in a basic set. It usually has to be purchased individually.

If your going to be doing any melamine work, as part of your basic router bits, you will need two basic trimming bits. The straight trimming bit used to trim edges, and the 7 degree angle to 15 degree angle bit used for trimming corners.

MOLDING BITS:

The most common of all molding bits is the "quarter round" bit for the purpose of making a variety of 1/4" designs on any piece of wood. There's also the 3/8" width "quarter round" which should be part of your basic router bits.
