Pergola Plans For DIY Wood Pergola Projects

Pergolas can easily be built with the help of simple pergola plans even without previous carpentry experience, as I did for my patio pergola. Wood is a warm, cozy, yet pliable material that makes the perfect choice for an outdoor pergola. Whether you choose to build your pergola in the garden or over the patio, this beautiful structure can be built by following a plan that can help you save money over ready made kits.

3 Circular Saw

It is important to choose the location first, as the final product will have a dramatic effect on the whole landscape. Once done that, it is just a matter of purchasing the materials and tools, or borrowing some of them if too expensive. Nails, a hammer, nuts and bolts, sandpaper and a hand saw are always at hand in a household, but you may need to borrow electric tools such as an electric saw, an angle grinder and a drill.

3 Circular Saw

Woodworking can be one of the most satisfactory activities even if a novice, providing a good plan of action is met. In order to build a DIY pergola I followed some simple yet accurate instruction in a design of my choice from a range of pergola plans. The project was laid out step by step, from post foundations, to post rigging and alignment, height, width, size and shape for all joists, rails and posts. It did require some work, sawing, cutting and sand blasting before all the pieces could be assembled together.

Over all, it took me one long weekend and the help of a friend to build my DIY pergola. The project went smoothly except for few minor mistakes that were easily corrected thanks to the wood pliability. In my specific case the pergola was attached to a pre existing first floor front deck, so as to extend the shady area over the ground floor front patio. The results have been impressive to me. I was even more impressed with the money saved in the process, as a ready made pergola kit can cost up to 00.

What I would not save money on though, is wood. I chose a very tough and beautiful tropical hard wood, but it could easily have been cedar or any other quality construction wood. These woods are naturally weather resistant, though they may gray and darken with time.

To avoid that, I stained my pergola with a UVA and rain resistant resin paint that additionally brought out all the natural wood texture and beauty, giving it a glossy and gorgeous look. I was actually surprised how good it looked in the end, considering that I was at first hesitant to implement the project. The design of my choice has a tight rail span to provide extra hold for climbing plants or hanging flowers. No much sun is coming through at all, providing a cool relaxation area to share with family and friends.

Other styles may come in different sizes and shapes, like circular or triangular, or be designed as free standing structures in the garden or attached to the house, say over a patio. Over all, pergola plans help you enhance your garden landscape, save money over ready made kits, provide a focal point where to socialize, improve household livability and increase property value as an added bonus.

Top Ten Roofing Tools

If you're looking for roofing tools, you've come to the right place. It's been said: "If your only tool is a hammer, every problem looks like a nail". So it's always best to have the right tool for the job. It will help you do quality work and do it fast. Many projects require special roofing tools, but these are the ones that go with me to every job.

3 Circular Saw

#10 -- Pry Bar
The pry bar, or "flat bar" as it is sometimes called is the "Swiss Army Knife" of roofing tools. I've used mine for everything from pulling nails to pounding them in, to cutting wood, cutting metal and popping shingles loose for repairs. Be sure to get a second one for back-up... and for two-handed staple pulling. A good choice is the Stanley Wonder Bar.

3 Circular Saw

#9 -- Utility Knife
A sharp knife is handy for both removing the old material and installing the new stuff. Go with a model that allows you to change blades fast -- without tools. I've found that knives with retractable blades tend to get gummed up with roofing tar. As such, I prefer a knife with a fixed blade. My preference is a Stanley Model 10-399.

And you really should have two knives in your tool belt. Keep each knife filled with half straight blades and half hook blades. The straight blades cut well on the back of the shingles. The hook blades cut well on the front. This saves a lot of time switching back and forth between blades. The second knife also gives you a backup with both types of blades in it should you misplace one of them.

#8 -- Hand Broom
You might not think a hand broom belongs on a top ten list of roofing tools, but a good clean up is an important part of every job. While scoop shovels and push brooms are fine for the big stuff, I've found that a hand broom is just right for the little stuff. And a Marshalltown #6519 is a good heavy-duty model to get.

#7 -- Hand Saw
Fixing rotted wood is a pretty common task for us roofers. I USUALLY have a circular saw and a reciprocating saw on site for the task, but a hand saw is one of the roofing tools that I ALWAYS have with me. Small cutting jobs can be handled in less time than it takes to run an extension chord. And it has saved the day many times over the years, when electrical power should have been available, but wasn't. I like the Stanley 20-045 Model which has a tough, long-lasting blade and is small enough to fit in my tool bucket.

#6 -- Measuring Tape
You'll also need a measuring tape to help with those wood repairs and to layout the new roof. I like a 25-footer with a stiff 1" blade. Almost any brand will do, but the Craftsman brand has a lifetime warranty.

#5 -- Metal Snips
Most "tinners" use dedicated snips for right and left cuts. But I've found that Wiss M3R Straight Cut Tin Snips (Yellow Handle) works fine for most all of my metal work.

When they eventually lose their edge, I replace them and use the old ones to cut shingles around pipes and vents. That's often quicker and easier than using a knife.

#4 -- Hand Seamer
This is one of those roofing tools that you don't use every day, but it sure comes in handy when doing flashing work. It's just the right size for making tight drip edge laps. It's also handy for making inside and outside corners as well as other miscellaneous bends. The one to get is a 3" Malco Model S-2

#3 -- Chalk Box
Of all the roofing tools I've had over the years, chalk boxes have caused me the most grief. They never seemed to hold enough chalk or chalk a consistent line. And the string always seemed to break just when I was in a big rush. The plastic reduction drives broke and the strings tangled within the box. It drove me nuts. That kept me constantly on the search for a better chalk box.

I found the "Mother of all Chalk Boxes" a few years ago with the purchase of a "Little Giant" by Keson. It uses a heavy line which I have yet to break. The line sucks up a lot of chalk, so you get a good solid mark. And you can fill the chalk box in seconds with a whole bottle of chalk at a time. You can retrieve the line fast and mine hasn't tangled yet. Be sure to get two. One for permanent red dye you can use on the underlayment and one for temporary blue chalk you can use on the shingles.

#2 -- Trowel
Just about any small trowel will do for spreading flashing cement, but the flat nose type, like a Marshalltown #11202 Margin Trowel, is good for cleaning out the bottom of buckets. If you're doing a lot of mud work, you will want to get a big brick trowel like a Marshalltown #10109. It can lay down a 10" mortar pad for tile in one swoop. It's helpful to grind the point down to make it easier working out of a five gallon pail.

#1 -- Hammer
No list of roofing tools would be complete without a hammer. In fact, some say: If it can't be fixed with a hammer, it can't be fixed! I wouldn't go quite that far, but it is essential for nearly every roofing job. My favorite is an Estwing Model E3-20 S. That's their 20 oz. Rip Hammer. It has enough weight to seat nails with one smack and it has a straight claw for digging out nails. It's virtually indestructible and carries a lifetime guarantee.

How Much Will My Laminate Flooring Cost?

The costs for installing laminate flooring in an average kitchen 10 feet by 10 feet can range anywhere from 0 to 00. This depends on the type of laminate flooring you choose to install in your kitchen. The prices range differently depending on the glued laminate flooring, floating flooring, or the glueless laminate flooring. When you install laminate floors in your kitchen you will need many different tools.

3 Circular Saw

If you decide on the floating laminate floors you won't need as many tools and this type of flooring is easier to install. However, the glueless laminate floors and the glued laminate floors require many tools if you want to do the job right. Before you install laminate flooring in your kitchen you need to prepare your kitchen floor for the job. The tools required for this include a pry bar to remove the shoe molding and trim, a level to verify the high and low spots on the floor, a cold chisel so you can pull up the old flooring, and a ball-peen hammer will be used to hit the chisel. You will need to use a putty knife for the prep work and a floor scraper to remove the entire previous residue from the floor.

3 Circular Saw

If you have a wood sub-floor then you will need a belt sander to smooth the surface. You might need to rent a jamb saw if you don't want to purchase one also. The jamb saw will be used to cut the door jamb and other trimmings so you have enough clearance for the flooring. A trowel will be used to smooth the leveling compound. The tools for preparation should cost you less than 0, including the cost for renting the saw. You will need many tools for the installation of the kitchen laminate flooring also. These tools include a backsaw and a miter box for cutting angles in the flooring. A circular saw is for straight cuts with a carbide tipped blade and a saber saw with a laminate blade will be used for cutting curves. You can rent saws from hardware stores if you do not want to purchase them for around to a day. The basic tools you will need for the installation of your laminate flooring in the kitchen will run you under 0.

You will need an electric drill, tape measure, marker, utility knife, screwdriver, coping saw, hacksaw, nails, claw hammer, caulking gun, clamp, straps, pull bar, spacers, and a tapping block. If you don't want to purchase each individual tool for installing laminate floors you can find laminate floor installation kits which include all of the tools you will need to complete the job from 0 to 0. The kits make it easier so you don't have to purchase each individual item but they are relatively more expensive than you will actually spend if you purchase the tools separately.

You will also need to purchase glue if you are using glued laminate flooring. Since you are considering putting laminate flooring in your kitchen you should use glue on glueless laminate flooring also. The glue will provide extra sealant in areas where the refrigerator or the dishwasher are and prevent less damage due to moisture or leaking from these appliances. The more protection you can provide on the kitchen floor with the glue and sealant, the longer your floors will last. The glue and the sealants should cost you around for your kitchen floor. Laminate flooring can cost you from .65 to $3.00 per square foot depending on the type of flooring you would like to install in your kitchen. For an average kitchen size of 100 square feet you will be looking at spending from 0 to 0 depending on if you would like the glueless planks or the glued laminate flooring. It will also depend on the quality of the laminate and the protection on the flooring.

You will also need to purchase a roll of underlay which will be placed under the laminate flooring. Underlay averages around .30 per square foot or for a roll of 100 square feet. It is important to remember that you will need to purchase at least 10 additional square feet of materials. Do not purchase the underlay and flooring for your exact floor size because you will make mistakes and need extra flooring. Installing laminate flooring in your kitchen will cost you around 0 to 00 depending on the flooring you decide upon and the actual sizes of your kitchen. You can purchase the tools separately or find kits that include all of the tools you need.

When you are laying laminate flooring in a kitchen, you should really think about choosing the higher end flooring because of the protection offered. A kitchen area is known to have mold issues near the sink, dishwasher, and refrigerator because of the moisture that comes with these appliances. It is better to lay the protected flooring so you don't find yourself having to repair or replace the flooring from moisture issues.

How to Make Your Own Concrete Curbs for Pennies Per Foot

This is a great idea I saw a few years ago. It worked well then and works great now, with the new plastic gutters that are available.

3 Circular Saw

Way back then gutters where wood or steel. The guys I saw used wood and oiled it so the concrete did not stick. They still had some problems removing the curbs but it worked!

3 Circular Saw

What you do is get a couple of 10' lengths of plastic gutter.

Make some braces to stop it from stretching open when you fill it. These can be made with 1" x 6" boards placed along each side and braced with stakes driven into the ground.
You will also need to cut a couple of pieces to cover each end. These can be screwed on to the brace boards.

Oil the inside of the gutter and fill with concrete!

In a couple of days remove your 1 x 6 boards and you will be able to take out your new curb. They come out easy because you can stretch the plastic a bit to help with removal.

Don't try to drag the curb around for at least a week, cover it with plastic and keep it wet for 7 days. It should be cured enough to use buy then if your temperature is in the 60 - 70 degree range. If it is colder you should wait longer, or until late Spring or Summer!!

It is also a good plan to add a length of 1/2" rebar to the curb when it is about 1/2 poured. This will make it far stronger and less likely to break when you are maneuvering it around.

These are VERY heavy so try to make them as close as you can to where the will be living. I always try to do them so all I have to do is roll them over and they are in place.

A good aggregate type mix is best for this.

Cupcake Pinata - Easy Step by Step Instructions

Cupcake themed birthday parties are popular for small children so why not make a cupcake pinata in the colours that match your decorations? Making it is lots of fun and easy to make - the whole family can help.

3 Circular Saw

Follow my instructions on making a cupcake piñata. It doesn't take long to make, however, you must allow a couple of days for it to dry. I would recommend starting to make the pinata about a week before it's needed. You can decorate the pinata as simply or as creatively as you want.

3 Circular Saw

The first time I made a pinata, I coated it in about 12 layers of newspaper. The children could not break it. We ended up getting out the golf clubs. I was worried the circular saw would be coming out next! Although you want it strong you only need about 4-5 layers of newspaper to make a very sturdy pinata.

All you need: 2 cups flour 3 cups water Newspaper Colored crepe paper String Balloon Small rubbish bin

I like to use a small rubbish bin as the base of my cupcake. I cover it in plastic wrap so that the papier-mache can easily be taken off when dry (and you don't ruin the rubbish bin!). If you don't have a suitable rubbish bin, you could use a cake tin, or anything that is the size you want. If you don't have anything suitable use cardboard to make the cylinder and use newspaper across the bottom.

Mix the flour and water together until it makes a smooth paste.

Tear the newspaper into long 1 inch wide strips and dip into the flour/water mixture. Carefully place the strips on the base until it is covered. You need to add about 4 layers of paper - you want it strong enough that everyone gets to have at least one turn at hitting it at the party!

Set aside and let dry.

Blow up a large balloon until it fits neatly into the top of the base. Cover the top half of the balloon with newspaper and let dry.

When dry, remove papier-mache from the base and remove plastic wrap, if used. Pop and remove the balloon and tape the balloon to the cupcake base. Use scrunched up paper to form a "cherry" on top.

Make a "U" shaped incision in the top as you will use this later to add candies, toys etc.

Punch 2 small holes in the top near the opening and thread a large piece of string through the two holes.

Paint with different designs and colors, or cover in crepe paper. When I use crepe paper, I like to cut the paper into squares about 2 inches square, scrunch them up and glue to the piñata.

Fill through the flap you left at the top, with candy, toys, or any other fun surprises.

Tie your pinata in the air with the string and have fun!
