Wooden Wheelchair Ramp Building and Seven Things You Must Know

I have recently noticed a great deal of interest in information on building wooden wheelchair ramps. While I recently wrote an article that covered the building of concrete ramps here at my own residence. I thought I would cover building a wooden wheelchair ramp. I have in the past built several wooden ramps.

Wooden ramps come in a wide range of sizes and materials. So we will cover the general rules you must follow in order to build a sturdy and most importantly safe wooden wheelchair ramp. I say most of all safe because I have seen and even used some wooden ramps that to my mind were more dangerous than not having a ramp. There are seven thing you must know in order to build a safe and sturdy wooden ramp.

1. Do I really need a wooden ramp here or would something else be better?

2. Remember the rules of ramp building. Your angle is 1:2 or 1" rise = 12" run, every 30" rise a landing of 60" long. Avoid long runs break them up if you can.

3. Materials must pressure treated or rated for outdoor use. Use stainless steel or galvanized carriage bolts and screws. You'll round footing forms and post brackets as well.

4. The tools you will need are very basic. You will need a hand saw or circular saw. A drill with a 1/2" bit to drill holes for the carriage bolts. A ratchet to tighten the nuts. A tape measure, a carpenters square, level, and cordless drill driver are other tools you will need. You will also need a post hole digger and a shovel.

5. Any structure is only as good as it's foundation. So we take special care with the footings of our wheelchair ramp. They should be place every six feet forming a 6' x 4' rectangle with a post bracket embedded in the top.

6. Don't make it too steep. Always check your angle and use the ratio. If it is too steep the user won't make it up.

7. Put it together right! Use screws for the decking and nuts and bolts at all the joints. Think of the ramp as a bridge for a wheelchair and build it as such. Don't just nail it together.

As we can see building a wooden wheelchair ramp is not a simple undertaking. It is however within the skill level of the average do-it-yourself builder. And while I wrote an article covering the building of a concrete ramp it was a rather simple threshold ramp you would encounter in typical slab construction home. I would not however recommend a concrete ramp project of the scale I have just described for the do-it-yourself builder unless you have prior experience with concrete projects of this scale.

Platform Bed - Make it Yourself and Save

Memory foam beds are becoming very popular. In order for a memory foam mattress to function properly it needs a solid platform frame. This will also extend the life of your expensive visco elastic foam mattress. Many of the less expensive platform frames are lightweight, flimsy and made of cheap material. If you need a good solid strong platform frame for your bed it is very simple to make this yourself.

Would you believe you can make a complete platform frame for about 0? And all you will need is 8 - two by fours and 2 - sheets of Birchwood plywood. This is all you need for the complete frame - stand, baseboard and headboard. You may be thinking, two by fours? Yes, two by fours. These are inexpensive but very strong, and when you are finished the two by fours will not even show. The 0 cost includes the hardware, stain and finish. If you think you cannot stain and finish yourself then you may not be familiar with water based stains and finish. These days they are very easy to use, dry fast, cleanup with just tap water and do not produce the strong odors like oil base products.

3 Circular Saw

To give you an idea how simple it is, the baseboard requires two pieces of the Birchwood plywood at 41 x 62 inches. The baseboard frame support requires 16 pieces of the two by fours of the following lengths: 2 at 78 ½ inches long, 4 at 47 inches long, 4 at 21 5/16 inches long, 4 at 12 inches long and finally 2 at 13 inches long. These are not fancy cuts, just straight cuts with a handsaw or electric circular saw.

The headboard requires 7 pieces of the Birchwood plywood: 2 at 40 x 31 inches, 2 at 62 x 7 inches, 2 at 26 x 8 inches and 1 at 26 x 3 inches. The back of this headboard requires the following two by fours of the following lengths: 4 at 50 inches long and 1 at 31 inches long.

If you have a simple electric circular saw, all of these cuts can be made in about 30 minutes or less.

The frame I propose is a very simple design for the purpose of making it very simple to build. The materials detailed above are enough to make a queen size frame and the plans can easily be scaled down for a fullsize or twinsize bed. When you are finished I assure you this will be a very sturdy strong frame that will last you a long time. I hate is flimsy furniture.

Tiling Your Bathroom Floor - Step by Step Instructions From a Professional

Step One - Demolition

The first thing you need to do is remove the base boards and the toilet. To remove the toilet, shut off the water supply and flush the toilet several times to empty as much water as possible. Disconnect the supply hose and make sure water is not dripping from the shut off. Then remove the two nuts which hold the toilet bowl to the floor and save in a place you can find later. The toilet might act stick when you first try to remove it. Just gently rock it side to side until it feels loose. Then, with some help, pick it straight up and store somewhere safe.

After you remove the base boards, it's time to remove that old nasty vinyl floor. Usually under the vinyl is a layer of particle board. This is usually 1/2" thick. The vinyl and particle board need to be removed. If you have a pedestal sink, you need to remove that prior to removing the vinyl floor. If you have a cabinet, use a reciprocating saw to cut as close to the cabinet and cabinet toe kick as possible. It's easier to leave the cabinet in than to remove it, the sink, and the faucet.

Use two crow bars to remove the particle board. It tends to come up in small chunks, but just keep at it and you'll eventually get it up. Then pull the nails that didn't come up with the particle board.

Step Two - Floor Preparation

Your sub-floor will either be plywood or tongue and groove boards. If you have plywood sub-floor, you can lay the cement board directly over that. If your sub-floor is tongue and groove wood boards, you need to install a layer of 1/2" CDX plywood over that sub-floor before you lay the cement board.

Use 1/4" cement board over the plywood sub-floor. There are several brands available, but they all work well. Some types can be cut using a regular circular saw with a carbide blade. This brand is known as Hardi-Backer. I prefer this type. The other brand (Wonderboard) is cut by scoring it with a utility knife and breaking it like sheetrock.

Mix some thin set mortar in a five gallon bucket per the mixing instructions on the bag. Using a drill motor and a mixing paddle makes this job much easier. Take a trowel with 1/4"x 1/4" notches and spread the thinset in the area where the first panel of cement board will lay. Place the cement board over the thin set and screw it down with Hardi-Backer screws. The spacing should be no more than 12" apart every direction. A trick to make this easier is to lay the cement board down on the sub-floor before you apply thin set and draw around the edges of the board so you know exactly the area to apply thin set to.

Step Three - Lay the Tile

If you don't own a tile saw, you can either borrow one from someone you know, or rent one. If you rent a saw, you can reduce the cost of renting it by laying out your floor and marking your cuts prior to renting the saw.

The first thing you need to do is determine how large your tiles will be including the grout joints. It's up to you how wide your grout joints will be. Most grout joints are 1/4" to 1/8". Lay out 10 tiles with spacers and measure the total length. Divide the total length by 10 and that will be your exact tile area with grout.

If you can, it's good to start with a full tile at large openings or doorways, but before you commit to that, check and see what size of cut you'll end up with at the other end. If it's too small, say less than 2", you'll need to cut the first tile (at the doorway) so you end up with a larger cut at the other end of the room. Measure the total distance from where the tiles start to where they end. Divide that measurement by the tile size (with grout). Take the remainder (the numbers after the decimal point), add one tile dimension to it, then divide that number by 2. That's the width of the first tile. Here's an example. Let's say you measure from your doorway to the back wall and you get 125.5". And your tiles are 12.25 inches with grout. You divide 125.5 by 12.25 and you get 10.245. You take the fraction.245 and add one tile size to it. 0.245+ 12.25= 12.49". Then you divide that by 2 and get 6.245" or 6-1/4". That's the width you would cut your first tile. And that's about what your last tile should be.

Next you're going to layout the entire floor in a grid pattern. Each grid will be equal to 4 tiles. A grid is two tiles wide by two tiles long. So if your tile size with grout is 12.25 inches, each grid will be 24.5" x 24.5". Make sure the perpendicular lines are square with each other. You can use the 3-4-5 method, or a large framing square. The 3-4-5 method is 3' one direction from a point, 4' approximately ninety degrees from the same point, and 5' diagonally from the ends of the other two lines. It's like a right triangle with a 3' side, a 4' side and the diagonal is 5'.

The next thing to do is mix some thin set mortar like you did with the hardi-backer. Using the same trowel, spread thin set in one "box" or grid at a time, making sure you can see the lines you snapped. Lay the four tiles in that grid, keeping the tiles half the grout joint width from the lines around the perimeter. You'll need to cut some tiles around cabinets, next to walls, and around the toilet. Make all your cuts first, then lay the tiles.

Step Four - Grout

Grouting is much easier and faster than laying the tile. You just mix up the grout as prescribed on the bag and,using a rubber grout float, spread the grout around and press it into the gaps between the tiles. You need to wait at least over night after you lay the tiles before you grout. Once you have filled the joints and scraped away the excess grout, let it set for 10-15 minutes then take a sponge and a bucket of water, and wipe the grout off the tiles. The sponge should be damp, not dripping wet. Rub gently in a circular motion and rinse the sponge frequently.

If your grout joints are 1/8" or wider, you'll need to use sanded grout. Non sanded grout is for grout joints less than 1/8" wide.

"Why study algebra?" If you're a parent, it's a question that you will no doubt hear as your children study the subject. If you're a student, it is a very natural question to ask, "What's the point of learning algebra in the first place?"

After all, all of the math leading up to algebra that we learned growing up such as addition, multiplication, decimals, fractions, and the like, seem to have a concrete meaning. These concepts all deal with numbers in some way or another and because of this we can wrap our brains more easily around the concepts. After all, I can pick up six pencils and give two to a friend and by using math I can figure out how many pencils I am left holding in my hand. We can all imagine situations where basic math serves us well - calculating your change in the grocery store for instance.

In short, basic math deals with numbers. Since we are all taught how to count at a young age the concepts of basic math, even though challenging at first, seem to have a practical value - even to children.

Enter Algebra. Suddenly, we are asked to deal not only with our comfortable numbers but with letters. And it doesn't stop with this. You start seeing parenthesis and exponents, and a whole potpourri of other symbols that seem to make no sense at all. This single fact more than any other turns many people off to learning algebra. At the very beginning you are asked to learn certain rules on how to calculate things in algebra. You must learn which steps are legal to do before others, and if you do them in the reverse order you get the wrong answer!

This leads to frustration. With frustration, despair follows in short order. And so the thoughts begin: "Why do I need to learn this?" "When would I ever use Algebra in real life?"

What you have to remember, though, is that basic math is riddled with special rules and symbols as well. For example, the symbols "+" and "=" were at one time foreign to us all. In addition the concept of adding fractions, as a single example, is filled with special rules that we must learn. When adding 1/3 to 1/3, for example, you keep the common denominator and add the numerators, so that 1/3 + 1/3 = 2/3. The point here is that when you begin to learn algebra it may seem overwhelming with the rules that you must learn, but this is no different from the multitude of rules that you had to learn that dealt with basic math such as addition and subtraction.

Learning Algebra is achievable for all, you just need to take things one step at a time and learn the basic rules before moving on to more advanced topics.

But this does not answer the question of "Why should I learn Algebra?" This is a difficult question, but the simplest answer is that Algebra is the beginning of a journey that gives you the skills to solve more complex problems.

What types of problems can you solve using only the skills you learned in Algebra? I invite you to take a journey with me back to your childhood. We've all been to the playground and had a great time on the see-saw, the merry-go-round, and the slide. At one time all of us were completely fascinated with these trips to the playground, but Algebra can help you understand them. The physics of all of these playground toys can be completely understood using only Algebra. No Calculus required. For example, if you knew the weight of a person at the top of the slide and you knew the height of the slide you could roughly calculate how fast you would be traveling as you exited the bottom of the slide.

On the see-saw, let's say that a person was sitting at one end and you knew that person's weight. You'd like to sit on the other side of the see-saw, but not at the very end - you'd like to sit opposite your partner in the middle between the seat and the pivot point. Using algebra, you could calculate how heavy you'd have to be to exactly balance the see-saw.

Moving away from playground equipment, as children we were all fascinated with the magical way that magnets attract each other. Using algebra, you could calculate how much force a given magnet would pull on another magnet.

There are examples all around us of things in the everyday world that you could fully understand using only the tools in algebra. If you drop a rock off of the roof of a house, how long would it take to hit the ground? If you dropped a second rock 100 times as heavy off of the roof of the same house, how long would it take to hit the ground? If you somehow brought a bulldozer up to the roof of the house and dropped it, how long would it take for the bulldozer to hit the ground? The answer in all three cases it takes the same amount of time to hit the ground! The time of free-fall depends only on the Earth's gravitational field (which is the same for us all) and the height of the roof you drop from. Even though the bulldozer is "heavier" than the rocks, they all fall at the same rate to the ground.

Most people would assume that learning about more "advanced" topics such as rocket propulsion and Einstein's theory of Relativity would require much more advanced math than Algebra. It is true that more advanced math is necessary to understand every facet of these and other advanced topics. However, many of the fundamental principles can be understood using only the tools in algebra. For example, the equations that describe how a spacecraft orbits the Earth only involve algebra.

Moreover, many of the central topics in Einstein's theory of special relativity can be understood only using algebra. For example, it turns out if you are traveling on a spaceship near the speed of light time actually slows down for you relative to your friends back on Earth. In other words, if you were to fly in a spaceship near the speed of light for some time and then you returned to Earth, you would find that you had aged very little while your friends on Earth have aged a great deal! Albert Einstein coined this phenomenon "time dilation" and it can easily be calculated using only Algebra. This effect is not a theoretical effect - it has actually been measured many times. In fact, the GPS system of satellites in the sky that the military and police forces depend on must take into account the effects of time dilation or else the system would not work at all! Because the satellites are moving in orbit around the Earth at speeds much smaller than the speed of light, the time dilation involved is very small - but it must be accounted for or the system would not function.

Now, you might be thinking, "I never learned how to calculate things such as this in my algebra class!" This is in fact true. All of the applications we have been talking about here are known as the study of Physics. If you had to boil the word Physics down to one sentence it would be: "Physics is all about studying the world around us using math as a tool."

Simply put all the math that you ever learn is really a tool for understanding the world around us. And believe me, we have only begun to scratch the surface of understanding how the world works. Algebra is a stepping stone to learning about this wonderful universe that we live in. With it you have the tools to understand a great many things and you also have the skills needed to continue on and learn Trigonometry and Calculus which are essential for exploring other types of problems and phenomena around us.

So, try not to think of Algebra as a boring list of rules and procedures to memorize. Consider algebra as a gateway to exploring the world around us all.
